DSS trounce Zahira to clinch Premier Trophy

D. S. Senanayake (DSS) College clinched the Premier Trophy when they trounced Zahira College 41-8 in the Inter-Schools Under-20 Knock-Out Rugby Tournament final played at Havelock Park yesterday.

DSS, who came into the final with two big wins under their belt, continued their outstanding form and went on to collect their points from four goals, two tries and one penalty.

Zahira, of course were up against it after conceding a 0-20 lead to their opponents at half time and eventually, they ended with a consolation try and one penalty.

DSS scored three splendid tries in the first half through number eight D. Peiris, Iriyagama and Udawatte with C. Rajaratna converting one try and putting over a penalty.

The winners added three more tries to their tally in the second half through Seneviratne, Balasuriya and prop forward Wijesinghe with Rajaratna making no mistake with all conversions.

Piliyandala CC take Chairman’s Trophy

Earlier, Piliyandala Central College took the Chairman’s Trophy after defeating the defending champions St. John’s College, Nugegoda 32-10 in the final.

The winners collected their points from one goal and five tries after leading 22-3 at half time while St. John’s managed to score only a goal and a penalty.

Winger N. Mendis scored twice for the winners while Wickramasinghe, D. Namindu, V. Jayashanka and Gajanayake scored a try each while Danushka converted one try.

Praveen Janith scored the solitary try for St. John’s while Shivantha Narada added the extra points and put over a penalty.
