Eastern Province Governor meets Fisheries Minister

Governor of the Eastern Province Senthil Thondaman met the Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda and held discussions yesterday at the Ministry of Fisheries.

The Governor held discussions on the current status of the projects implemented by the Ministry of Fisheries to develop the freshwater and seawater fishing industry and also discussed the ways to take measures to avoid obstacles crop up when engaging in fishing activities in the reservoirs on the lands belonging to Wildlife and Forest reserve zones.

The Governor especially discussed the Prawn Culture and other aquatic cultures carried out in the Eastern Province by NAQDA institute.

The governor requested the Minister of Fisheries to provide the fullest support of NAQDA institute and the Department of Fisheries which are under the Ministry of Education, in order to expedite the decisions on the fisheries activities taken by the District Development Committees of Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts in the Eastern Province.

Responding to the request, the Minister stated that he too is the Chairman of two District Development Committees, and has instructed the Officials of the state institutions of the Line Ministries to act swiftly to implement the decisions taken by District Development Committees. The Minister added that the President also has instructed the Officials of the line Ministries to implement the decisions taken by the District Development committees, swiftly.
