Economy recovering under dynamic leadership of President former UNP MP
Former UNP Kalutara district Parliamentarian Lakshman Wijemanne yesterday said that the economy is recovering under the dynamic leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe following an unprecedented economic crisis.
Wijemanne said that Japanese Foreign Minister who visited the country recently commended the efforts of the President to put the country back on the track of growth.
The Japanese government has informed the Government that it is ready to start the Light Rail Transit project which was cancelled by the previous government.
“As this project was cancelled by the government, Japan had taken the project to Bangladesh,” he said.
Wijemanne said that the Japanese Foreign Minister had also informed the government that her country will recommence the Bandaranaike International Airport expansion project.
“I don’t believe that there is another leader in Sri Lanka who has gained popularity especially in the international arena,” he said.
He said that State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya had announced that the interest of the Employee Provident Fund will be increased from nine percent to 13 percent, despite the JVP’s prediction that the interest rate given by the EPF for employees would fall further.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo yesterday, Wijemanne said that the JVP tried to create instability in the country by saying that the banks would collapse. But everyone can see how good the status of the banks is.
“The value of the rupee against the dollar has increased. A dollar, which was at Rs. 390 has reached the level of Rs. 280 today,” he said.
He said that the President has strived to put the country on the right track in the last two years and many countries including France, Japan and India are supporting the debt restructuring process.
