The Private Member’s Bill (PMB) on fielding educated young male and female candidates to future Local Government and Parliamentary elections will be presented to Parliament by former Media Minister and Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Imtiaz Bakeer Markar shortly. Parliament’s Administration Assistant Director Udaya Munasinghe told the Daily News   that the Attorney General’s Department (AG) has given authority to present the proposed Bill in Parliament.

He said according to the Constitution the AG’s Department’s view in this regard has already been sought and this proposed Bill could now be presented before the House.

Bakeer Marker said the objective of presenting this Bill before Parliament is to seek 25 per cent male and female young and energetic representatives to LG Bodies and Parliament which has been a long overdue. He said the importance of youth representation in Parliament was extensively discussed at a well- attended youth forum held recently in Colombo. Bakeer Markar said due to lack of young members in Parliament, the important issues related to the well-being of country’s youth population are hardly discussed at Parliamentary sessions.
