Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that reforms will soon be introduced to the education sector aiming to let students enhance their knowledge and learn how to apply that knowledge in life.

He was addressing at a workshop on modern sciences yesterday at Royal College, Colombo. The Leo Club of Royal College organized this seminar under the theme ‘Cosmic Chronicles’, aiming to ignite a passion for space exploration, astronomy, and physics among students.

The Minister who participated in the event as the chief guest said that innovation fills the gap between the vision and reality. In the general education available in the country, attention is drawn on developing knowledge, attitudes and skills. These parameters are called the ‘three pillars’ in education.

“We are rich in knowledge hunting, our attitudes are fairly okay, but the issue is with skills. We Sri Lankans are lagging behind in improving skills,” he said. “Students should know how to apply the knowledge acquired from school and various other sources of knowledge.”

The Minister added that with a view to enhancing a research culture, the Education Ministry will sign a MoU with Peradeniya University in due course.

Under the education reforms going to be implemented, the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education system will be introduced. Over 100 countries have already implemented the STEAM education, the Minister said.

According to Leo Club President Shenuka Dasanayake, their foremost goal is to spark a deep-rooted interest and passion for space exploration, astronomy, and physics among students.
