Eight arrested over smuggling racket
Kahathuduwa Police have arrested seven Sri Lankans who tried to go to France via Azerbaijan together with the owner of an employment agency in Kahathuduwa who arranged the smuggling attempt.
Police launched an investigation after a person complained that he had given Rs.800,000 to the employment agent to go abroad but when he went to the airport he was prevented from leaving the country by the airport authorities noting that he had no valid visa.
He had complained to the Police that six other people too were duped by the agent like him after collecting Rs.6.2 million from them. According to the Police, during the lengthy investigation, it had been found that the group of complainants had violated the Immigration Act by trying to go to Azerbaijan via France on a tourist visa. All the arrested people are to be produced in Court.
