The Panadura Police Criminal Investigation Division says that they have recorded statements from eight regarding a civil engineer who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances, 12 days ago.

Police say that two people who jointly run a hydroelectric power plant in Balangoda area with the civil engineer are also among the people who had been questioned. The 66 year old civil engineer Dulwala Devage Wijesinghe is a resident of Boralesgamuwa.

The cab belonging to the missing engineer was found near the Narthupana Bridge on the Horana-Matugama road near the Uduwara junction by a group of Anguruwathota Police officers who were on a mobile patrol at around 1.30 am on December 29.

Both the front doors of the cab were open and when the Police officers turned on the flashlight and observed inside the cab, they had found a laptop computer, a travel bag containing clothes, a pair of slippers, a cap and a wallet on the seat next to the driver’s seat.

After the Police officers made a call to the phone number in the wallet, the wife of the engineer had responded to it and she had given statements to the Police that when she made a phone call to her husband at around 8.30 pm the day before that, he had told her that he was in the Kesbewa area. But during the investigation conducted by the investigating police officers through the phone number of the civil engineer, it has been revealed that the last time he made calls to his home was from the Ingiriya, Urugala area.

The missing civil engineer had left his residence at Boralasgamuwa Abeyratne Mawatha on December 25 to the hydroelectric power plant in Balangoda area.

He had left Balangoda on December 28 to return to his home and had arrived in Balangoda at around 4.41pm in the evening and obtained Rs.200,000 from an ATM of a private bank and gave Rs.190,000 to a power plant manager, Police have found.

It is recorded in the CCTV camera footage of him travelling from Balangoda to Kiriella and although it is a 2-3 minute drive from Urugala to Ingiriya, the Police say strangely he takes a longer route through Egal Oya.

A Police officer said that after a long time of 45 minutes, CCTV footage near the hospital shows the engineer emerging from a road close to the Ingiriya hospital and going towards Narthupana from Yala Junction after passing Horana.

The attention of the investigating officers has been focused on whether the engineer took the longer road to avoid the Police roadblock near Ingiriya town.

The Police officer added that a CCTV camera recorded the cab travelling on the opposite road to the house of the missing civil engineer and switching off its front lights at around 9.30 pm.

A senior Police officer said that investigations are being conducted from several angles, including whether he was kidnapped and whether his cab was brought to the Narthupana bridge to make it appear that he committed suicide by jumping into the water.
