Eight sentenced to death in 2003 Kalutara murder case

Kalutara High Court Judge Pradeep Abeyratne yesterday (27) sentenced to death eight defendants accused of killing a person by hacking him to death with sharp weapons.

The victim resided at Kaleel Place, Kalutara South. The Attorney General had filed indictments before the High Court against eight suspects in connection with the hacking to death of the then 28-year-old Seyyar Mohammad Mohammad Faris on or around March 24, 2003 with sharp weapons.

Mohammad Zein Mohammad Hamza (46) residing in Maha Heenatiyagala, Kalutara, Abdul Karim Mohammad Rawisdeen (49), Mohammad Maws Mohammad (59), Mohammad Riyazdeen Mohammad (45), Mohammad Jifri Mohammad Jinnah (47), Wridi Mohammad Jifri Mohammad Firdouse (43), Mohammad Zaheer Mohammad Siam (44), Mohammad Nilabdin Mohammad Hafeel (45) were sentenced to death.

It was revealed during the investigation that due to a personal dispute, the victim was beaten to death with sharp weapons near the playground at Kaleel Place in Vettumankada in Kalutara South area.The case was taken up for hearing under the number HC 577/05 dated April 29, 2008.

After a long trial of nearly 20 years, the verdict was announced yesterday afternoon and a large number of people gathered in front of the Kalutara Court.
