The two-storied house in Mahabage Guruge Estate, where retired Senior Superintendent of Police Jayalath Balagalla resides, was severely damaged in a fire on April 4 night.
It has been found during the investigation that the fire that started on the lower floor due to an electrical leak and had spread due to the elevator catching fire.
The retired SSP had been asleep at home with his wife when the house caught fire. They escaped unhurt because they had woken up before the fire spread, according to Mahabage police. Although the neighbours and the police had tried hard to bring the fire under control, the fire was finally put out by the Navy’s Fire Department.
Mahabage police said that the house and property were heavily damaged in the fire.
