Eleven Mercantile teams vie for Munchee Trophy

Mercantile Cricket Association ‘D’ Division 40 overs League Tournament 2023 will be sponsored by Ceylon Biscuits Limited for the third consecutive year. The tournament got underway on November 12 which is participated by 11 teams pooled into two groups vying for the Munchee Trophy.

Group ‘A’ consists of six teams – MAS Bodyline (PVT) Ltd, Hemas Group, Colombo Dockyard, Trellborg Lanka, Melwire Rolling and Delmege Group.

The ‘B’ Group consist of five teams – Airport & Aviation, National Development Bank (NDB , Central Finance, MAS Unichela (Pvt) Ltd, and David Pieris Group Of Companies.

The tournament is conducted in two stages, the league consisting 25 matches and the knock-out consisting seven matches including the final. Special awards will be given to the Best Batsman, Best Bowler, Man Of the final and Man Of The series. All matches will be officiated by MCA appointed Match Referee and field umpires are assigned by the Association of Professional Cricket Umpires (APCU) and the scorers are assigned by Sri Lanka Cricket Scorers. The official match ball use for the matches up to the final is played with the HB Test – Red Ball with the MCA Logo. At the competition of the league round all four teams in group A and B will advance to the quarter finals. Nawaloka Hospitals carried away the CBL Munchee Trophy, beating Melwire Rolling by 15 runs in the previous final played on 5th February, 2022 at the MCA grounds.

The President MCA Nalin Wickramasinghe thanked Management Of Ceylon Biscuits Ltd for sponsoring the tournament for the third consecutive year and the excellent support given MCA.

Speaking at the media conference Janmesh Paul Anthony, the General Manager Marketing said Ceylon Biscuits Ltd always willing to help MCA in future too and wished to have a successful tournament and give a helping hand to promote sports in Sri Lanka.
