Employee who defrauded garment factory of over Rs. 180 Mn remanded

The officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have arrested an employee who worked in the procurement department of a garment factory in Sandalankawa, who defrauded the firm of over Rs.180 million in the guise of making payments for the purchase of raw materials from a non-existent company registered under the name of his mother.

According to CID sources, the suspect had been perpetrating this fraud for a long time in the guise of buying raw materials for the garment factory from a bogus business enterprise under the name of his mother.

A senior Police officer mentioned that the products of this garment factory with an international reputation are being exported to foreign markets.

The CID had received a complaint regarding this fraud based on the information revealed during an internal audit conducted by the factory. It had been revealed during the audit that this employee has been committing this fraud for about one-and-a-half years.

He had reportedly used the fraudulently earned funds to live a luxurious life.

The Police said he had used several luxury vehicles. The CID also found an apartment that this person had bought for Rs. 11 million in an apartment complex in the Waikkala area. He had also bought nine perches of land in Pannala town for Rs. 13 million, CID sources said.

The Police have also obtained an order from the court prohibiting the sale or transfer of the properties he owns.

A senior official of the CID stated that he was remanded after being produced before the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate’s Court.

The CID states that investigations are underway to ascertain whether this person has received support from other people to carry out this fraud.
