Engage primary children more in extra, co-curricular activities – Education Minister
Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that priority should be given to extracurricular activities in primary education rather than conducting endless examinations.
He said that children in primary grades should be more engaged in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities rather than academic activities.
“By engaging in extracurricular activities like sports, a balanced personality can be built and it helps to produce a healthy group of children,” he said.
He also stated here that in the future, the number of examinations conducted in the primary grades will be reduced and attention will be paid to increasing the study activities related to practical activities in the classroom. He said this while being the chief guest at the award ceremony of the under-15 and under-17 cricket tournament organized by the Sri Lanka School Cricket Association at the Nelum Pokuna Theater.
Further commenting on this, the Minister added that the school sports matches that were missed during the period when schools were closed during the Covid pandemic period, were able to be properly conducted and completed after a great effort.
Under the school cricket development moves, Rs.1,000 million has been allocated by the budget for the promotion of cricket, which has become very popular among the school students. This allocation will be used in the next few months to develop the stadiums and cricket turfs of the schools and to supply sports equipment.
“The school cricket, which was an extra-curricular activity, is being promoted with the support and provision of the Sri Lanka Cricket Association since school is the hotbed of producing talented cricketers for the country,” he added.
