England register first win over Bangladesh

Opener Dawid Malan stroked his career best 140 in 107 balls as England recorded an easy 137-run win over Bangladesh in their Cricket World Cup fixture played at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala yesterday.

the England team played at a high standard after being invited to bat first, were heading towards 400 runs when they were 296 for 2 wickets but lost seven only adding 168 runs as they finished the innings at 364 for 9 wickets in 50 overs.

Left-hander Dawid Malan played an anchor role to complete his hundred in 91 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes. Openers Malan and Jonny Bairstow added a solid platform to get 115 runs in 17.5 overs while Bairstow was out in 18th over scoring 52 in 59 balls with 8 fours.

The experienced Joe Root once again came to the fore with a well-fluent knock of 82 in 107 balls with 8 fours and a six also added 151 runs for the second wicket while Malan was dismissed for 140 in 107 balls with 16 fours, 5 sixes by Mahadi Hasan.

Skipper Jos Buttler and Henry Brook scored 20 runs each but in the last part of the innings Bangladesh bowlers were able to pick wickets at regular intervals, yet England secured a formidable 364 for 9 wickets with a run rate of 7.28.

Bangladesh Spinner Mahedi Hasan was the pick of the bowlers taking 4 for 71 in his 8-over spell while Shoriful Islam took 3 for 75.

Bangladesh chasing 365 runs were unable to make a good start while they were 49 for 4 wickets after 8.3 overs. Opener Litton Das made a fine knock of 76 in 66 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes while England paceman Reese Topley got an early breakthrough to pick up back-to-back wickets in his first two overs.

In addition, senior bowling partner Chris Woakes gave him good support from the other end to break Bangladesh’s top order. The experienced skipper Shakib Al Hasan who scored only one run in 9 balls was clean bowled by Topley which was his third wicket and England bowlers fought back strongly. The experienced Mushfiqur Rahim hit 51 in 64 balls with 4 fours while Towhid Hridoy made 39 but that was not enough to reach their target and bundled out for 227 in 48.2 overs Reese Topley was the most successful English bowling taking 4 for 43 in his 10-over spell while Chris Woakes took 2 for 49. Dawid Malan was named the Man of the Match.
