English Language Proficiency Course for 755 teachers in Sabaragamuwa by British Council
755 teachers in Sabaragamuwa will be given English language training by the British Council for the first time in Sri Lanka.
Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council and the British Council have jointly started an English Language Proficiency Course for 755 teachers who teach English in Ratnapura and Kegalle districts, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Governor Navin Dissanayake said.
He mentioned this at the inauguration event of the project held in Ratnapura last Wednesday. At the inauguration event the agreement in this regard was signed by Provincial Education Ministry Secretary Chamara Bamunuarachi on behalf of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council and British Council Project Director Orlando Edwards.
This six-month course is designed so that English teachers can participate without disrupting the education of school children. The total amount spent by Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council for this purpose is 50 million rupees.
Sabaragamuwa Provincial Governor Dissanayake who spoke here said that giving priority to the development of human resources along with the development of physical resources is the prime objective of the province.
“Therefore, English teachers in Sabaragamuwa province are given proper training, which can be utilised for the betterment of students. This agreement between the British Council and the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council was reached with Cabinet approval,” he added.
In the world, English is used by 1.4 billion people, Chinese language is used more than 1 billion, and Hindi language is used by 700 million people, he said.
“This English language mastery workshop we started is a pilot project. Based on the success of this, it will be taken necessary measures to start it island-wide by the relevant authorities,” he added.
Besides, Next year it has been planned to start an Information Technology (IT) programme by the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council in collaboration with the Sabaragamuwa University at a cost of 50 million. Through that, it will be taken steps to provide special training on IT for teachers who teach IT in Sabaragamuwa.
On this occasion, Chief Secretary Mahinda S. Weerasuriya, Province Director of Education Upali Chandrakumara and others were present.
