EPLUS Exam, UoVT sign agreement to revolutionize English Language Testing
The University of Vocational Technology (UoVT) and EPLUS Exam International have entered into a strategic partnership in development for English language education in Sri Lanka. This collaboration, marked by the signing of the Eplus English Language Testing System (EPELTS) agreement, aims to redefine English language assessment in the country.
The agreement was signed at the University of Vocational Technology, Rathmalana, with Professor Mahesh Edirisinghe, Vice Chancellor of the University of Technology, and Dr. V. Janagan, Chairman and Founder of EPLUS Exam International, representing their respective institutions.
This partnership heralds a new era in English language evaluation, aligning with the vision of President Ranil Wickremesinghe to prioritize English as a primary working language while preserving Sinhala and Tamil as national languages.
EPLUS Exam International first introduced EPELTS in 2020, catering to over 1,000 students. This innovative assessment system is designed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of English language proficiency, covering Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills. It marks a departure from traditional national-level English examinations in Sri Lanka, which have historically focused only on Reading and Writing. EPELTS stands as the first comprehensive English language evaluation tool to assess all four language skills in the country.
Professor Mahesh Edirisinghe expressed enthusiasm for this partnership, emphasising its alignment with the university’s mission to advance educational standards. “Our collaboration with EPLUS Exam International represents a significant stride in enhancing English language proficiency of students in Sri Lanka at a national and international level,” said Professor Edirisinghe. “We are excited to be part of this pioneering journey in English language assessment in Sri Lanka”.
Dr. V. Janagan highlighted the transformative potential of EPELTS, stating, “This system is not just a test; it’s a testament to our commitment to excellence and vision for the linguistic future of Sri Lanka. EPELTS is poised to reshape the landscape of English language evaluation, contributing significantly to the academic and professional success of our students.”
The agreement underscores a shared commitment to elevating language skills and enhancing educational outcomes. EPELTS is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping Sri Lanka’s language policy, fostering a more productive and authentic approach to language education.
Dr. Janagan urged the academic community to engage in thoughtful discourse to ensure a robust and effective language policy. “Through EPELTS, we have the opportunity to shape the linguistic abilities of our community, which is crucial for the nation’s progress,” he added.
The introduction of EPELTS is a response to the evolving demands of the globalised world, where English proficiency is increasingly recognised as a critical skill for academic and professional success. This partnership between EPLUS Exam International and the University of Vocational Technology marks a significant milestone in pursuing educational excellence and linguistic prowess in Sri Lanka.
