Esandi Newansa wins a chess gold

A promising chess player Esandi Newansa of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda won the gold medal at the Sri Lanka Online Chess Championship Premier event yesterday. The event conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) for the first time in Sri Lanka as the selection event for the International Online Rapid Chess Championships.

At the end of the nine rounds Newansa was able to maintain an unbeaten record with 7.5 points. She was able to put forward some brilliant performances against some strong players throughout the tournament.

Meanwhile Probodhi Methma of Sabaragamuwa University and Desandhi Dhihansa of Sirimavo Bandaranayake BMV were placed second and third to clinch silver and bronze medals respectively. The top three players of the final rankings will get chance to take part in the Online National Chess Championship (D.R)
