Espalier, UHDP systems introduced for mango, guava cultivations here
The Agriculture Ministry’s Modernization Project has introduced the new Espalier System and UHDP-Ultra High-Density Plantation for mango and guava cultivations for the first time in Sri Lanka.
This new agricultural technology has so far been successful in the A Park-Agricultural Park located in Wewala, Dambulla. A large number of farmers have begun mango and guava cultivation using this technology.
So far, 496 farmers have successfully cultivated mango under this method in 425 acres in the Wewala area. 350 farmers have cultivated guava on 400 acres. The Agricultural Modernization Project also provides the necessary technology, advice and cultivation equipment. Under this, one farmer can earn between three to five million rupees per season from half an acre.
The Espalier System agricultural technology replaces mango and guava trees by pruning them as vines. UHDP -Ultra High-Density Plantation method means planting the highest number of plants in a small land area. According to the Agriculture Sector Modernization Project, 560 mango plants and 1,120 guava plants can be planted per acre in this cultivation system. Only 84 mango plants and 120 guava plants are planted per acre in traditional cultivations. Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera recently observed the cultivation of mangoes and guavas in the fields cultivated under the UHDP-Ultra High-Density Plantation method and the Espalier System. There, the Minister discussed with Jullien Welz who is working to introduce this cultivation system to Sri Lanka and Dr. Rohan Wijekoon, Director of the Agricultural Modernization Project.
The Minister advised on roping the young community to this cultivation method for more yield from less land.
