At the commencement of last century, the necessary steps had been taken by the government of the time to launch an educational programme in the estate sector with a view to develop the education of estate children.
Following which, several buildings were set up in selected estates to open schools. Later, this programme was expanded up to other estates. But, after that, there has been no essential facility additions made to any of these schools.
In the meantime, the majority of Tamil students leave these schools for various reasons. Poverty is the primary setback of their educational career. Given these conditions, the educational activities in these schools are hampered, making it difficult, for them to continue further on, the principals said.
There is an urgent need for the government to take the necessary steps to improve their conditions and promote the education of those in the estate sector.
