Estate workers deserve better wages, living conditions – NPP
National People’s Power (NPP) Leader, MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament yesterday that estate workers deserve a fair salary to enable them to live with dignity and social protection and any plantation companies that are not ready to give this facility should be taken over by the Government. We have not been able to provide those people with the basic needs to live fairly even though two centuries have passed so far.
He said this while participating in the Adjournment Debate on the socio-economic issues faced by the plantation community at present. Life had become almost unbearable for many estate sector workers due to the rise in the cost of living and no real increment in daily wages. Estate workers are underpaid and forced to live in cramped and unhygienic conditions, lacking basic facilities such as health care and education.
“Two centuries have passed. Still, we have failed to give them a fair life,” he said.
