Ex-police officers supporting NPP have betrayed Police Dept – Chandrasekera

United Youth Organization Chairman and a former Police Inspector, Sudath Chandrasekara issued a statement, condemned the retired police officers who supported the National People’s Power (NPP), alleging that they have betrayed the entire Police Department.

The statement further elaborates on the issue as follows: All retired police officers who participated in the gathering organized by the JVP have committed a grave insult to the police department and their fellow officers. This is a despicable act that should be condemned with disdain.

As a police officer during the 1988-89 period, I, like many of my colleagues, faced death threats from the JVP. They threatened to kill my entire family if my parents did not pull me out of the Police Service. Many of my fellow officers faced similar fates. Despite being a victim of a JVP hand grenade attack during a scholarship ceremony at Harischandra College in Negombo in 1988, I was fortunate enough to survive.

During the JVP insurgency, how many police officers were brutally murdered by the JVP? How many families of those officers were killed? How many officers were threatened with death? How much property of the country was destroyed? Can these retired officers forget all these atrocities?

“I believe it is highly contemptible for individuals like Ravi Seneviratne to forget these events and betray the entire police department. The bitterness he harbours due to being remanded for drunk driving is typical of JVP characteristics.
