Existing ordinances not sufficient to enforce the law – Minister Kanchana Wijesekera
Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said in Parliament yesterday (22) that if the existing ordinances are not sufficient to enforce the law against the people who carried out the Easter Sunday attack, Parliament should work to amend them.
The Minister also said that he expects that Ranjith Maddumabandara, as the then Defence Minister, will say who he informed in writing about this attack before the end of this debate.
The Minister said this during the adjournment debate on the Easter Sunday attack. The Minister also said that no matter how many debates in this Parliament, I do not believe that it will help to find the real mastermind of this. The ongoing cases are based on what Dappula Livera presented. Intelligence agencies, Army and Police in this country have reported the information.
The report of the Commission or the Parliamentary Select Committee does not say that there is any political connection to this attack. The Channel Four contract is being implemented with the aim of destroying the stability of the country by stabilizing the economy. We have to find the Channel Four connection. This Channel Four incident has the effect of changing the investigations of the Easter attack.
It is not that our intelligence agencies did not have information. The problem is not acting on the information provided by the intelligence agencies. Nilantha Jayawardena sends a two-page letter to the then Minister of Law and Order, Ranjith Maddumabandara. It informs us about the Saharan. What was Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara’s decision after receiving this letter? We have a problem with that. I am not trying to say that people from the political camp are involved in this. The Opposition is trying to insinuate that this attack happened because of former Presidents Gotabhaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa, who did not represent the political camp at that time. There were also people who did political work with the Saharans.
The people involved in this incident must be laughing at the debate going on in Parliament regarding this attack. The houses of around 75 members of Parliament were set on fire. Even knowing who set the fires, they are free today. The reason for that is the weakness of this law. Parliament should act to ensure justice for the people who are traumatized by the Easter attack. This Parliament should work to amend and pass the outdated ordinances.
