Expressways now freed of special pass ‘freebies’

A senior Road Development Authority official said that with the advent of the new Government it has been possible to put a stop to the misuse of the ‘Special Pass’ given for some VIP’s and essential service providers to use the expressways to travel free by some politically affiliated individuals.

The official said around 150 to 200 vehicles use the expressway daily abusing the special pass system causing massive losses by way of income.

According to a gazette issued by the Road Development Authority Director General S. Suriya Bandara, only the President, Prime Minister, RDA maintenance vehicles and ambulances can travel for free on the expressways.

When we inquired, the Deputy Director General of the Highway Operations and Maintenance Management Division P.H.Gunasinghe said that steps were taken to inform all the cashiers at expressway exit and entry points to implement the above law to the letter.

Knowledgeable sources said during the previous governments, around 150 to 200 vehicles were plying on the expressway abusing special permits and at times calls from the political offices had ordered some vehicles to be allowed to travel free on expressways causing massive losses to government coffers.
