External JMOs to conduct postmortem on baby boy

Mount Lavinia Acting Magistrate Shanta Kumara Silva on Sunday ordered that the postmortem examination of the body of the infant who died 14 days after birth at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, be conducted by a team of Judicial Medical Officers (JMOs) who are not attached to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital and the report be submitted to Court.

In addition, the Acting Magistrate ordered Kalubowila Teaching Hospital Director Dr. Sagari Kiriwandeniya to appoint a team to investigate the baby’s death and conduct a formal investigation through the Health Ministry and submit its report to the Court as well.

Twins were born to Akila Boniface, resident of house No. 31/4, Sarvodaya Mawatha, Fifth Lane, Honnanthara, Piliyandala, and Kalunayake Alawala Arachchige Hashan Dilranga at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital on September 9, and one of the infants had died on September 19 and other had passed away on September 23.

The infant’s relatives had lodged a complaint with the Kohuwala Police saying that the death of the child who died on September 23 was suspicious.

After reporting the facts regarding the incident to the Mount Lavinia Court, Acting Magistrate Shanta Kumara Silva had visited the mortuary of the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital and examined the body of the infant and carried out an on-site investigation.

He had ordered that the postmortem examination of the baby boy be conducted by a team of external Judicial Medical Officers and the report be submitted to the Court.

In addition, the Acting Magistrate had ordered Dr. Kiriwandeniya to appoint an independent investigation team, external to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, to conduct a formal investigation and submit its report to the Court.

Accordingly, the Court order will be submitted to the Health Ministry and the postmortem examination of the baby’s corpse will be conducted through a team of external Judicial Medical Officers and the incident is also due to be investigated.
