Factory didn’t have Environment Protection Licence – CEA

Central Environmental Authority spokesman Ajith Weerasundera yesterday said that the chemical factory at the Homagama Industrial Zone in Katuwana, which caught fire on Thursday night had not obtained valid Environment Protection Licence(EPL).

He was of the view that the smoke emitted from the factory has affected the air quality in the area and the environment in the vicinity of the factory has also been polluted due to discharge of waste water without proper treatment.

Weerasundara added that the Industrial Zone administration should also be responsible for allowing to operate the factory without the EPL. “The CEA will seek legal action against the factory,”he said.
