Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, commenting on the controversy regarding the Science question paper for the GCE Ordinary Level Exam, said a separate marking system will be prepared and marks will be given accordingly so as not to cause any injustice to students.

The Minister said that a problem has arisen regarding some questions in the Science paper given at the GCE Ordinary Level Exam this year and the group of teachers who prepared the question paper met on Sunday (12) and discussed the matter.

He was responding to a query by Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Rohini Kaviratne regarding the controversy over the GCE Ordinary Level Science and English papers, where a few questions outside the curriculum had appeared in the Science paper and the structure of the English language question paper had changed.   The Minister, responding, pledged to take all necessary measures to ensure that no injustice is caused to any student sitting for the GCE Ordinary Level Examination this year.

The Minister said that issues have been reported on several questions and Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) of the Science paper. A discussion in this regard was held on Sunday with the participation of paper setters and necessary changes to the marking scheme will be done after the completion of the sample paper marking.    MP Kaviratne further alleged that the structure of the English question paper has been changed this year and that it is unreasonable for most students in rural areas where there are no trained English teachers.   The Minister stressed the importance of maintaining the quality of the English paper.
