‘Fake Google’ scam: Chinese nationals among 212 arrested in Pakistan crackdown

Pakistani authorities have arrested 212 people, including Chinese nationals, following raids on three alleged illegal call centres in Islamabad linked to an international online fraud network.

Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency carried out simultaneous operations in the E-11 and G-10 areas, targeting centres suspected of defrauding people in Pakistan and overseas.

According to reports citing authorities, the alleged scams included impersonating Google representatives, fake online task schemes and romance scams.

Investigators seized 306 mobile phones, 383 computers and CPUs, and 299 monitors and laptops during the operations.

Both Pakistani and Chinese men and women were among those detained, although authorities have not disclosed the number of Chinese nationals arrested.

Investigators are also examining possible links between the alleged network and operations in India and Brazil.

A case has been registered, while investigations are continuing into the financial links of the network and the individual roles of those arrested. (Newswire)
