Fake sticker costing Excise revenue dearly – Champika
The Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Patali Champika Ranawaka said in Parliament yesterday that the tax lost from one bottle of alcohol due to fake stickers is Rs. 2,900.
He also said that the cost of a sticker is as little as Rs.1.80 and the Excise Department says that there is an exponential growth of ‘Kasippu’ (moonshine), illicit arrack and illicit toddy if the prices of alcohol is increased.
The MP also said that Parliament should conduct a formal investigation regarding the Excise Department.
The Chairman who said this while presenting the report of the committee also mentioned:”We would like to focus on the Inland Revenue Department, Customs Department and Excise Department, which generate revenue for us. We have presented a number of proposals to resolve the issues raised in these Departments. It is also requested to pay attention to this and bring these matters to a debate,”he said.
