Farmers leaving agriculture due to fertilizer policy – Vajira
The agriculture sector is facing a calamity as a result of the Government’s move to stop chemical fertilizer imports due to a lack of foreign exchange, UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena said.
Tea and cinnamon and many other crops have been destroyed and the farmers are leaving agriculture day by day. As a result of decreasing the export income, the country will face a severe foreign exchange crisis in the future, Abeywardena said.
“The decision to ban chemical fertilizer and urging farmers to use organic fertilizer has already created a number of problems. All the sections related to the agriculture field have collapsed. Farmers are leaving paddy
and vegetable cultivation. It is difficult to reverse the damage caused to the agriculture sector even for many decades. The present Government should be responsible for this pathetic situation. The present rulers do not have a correct policy and philosophy to run the country,” he added.
