Father, son killed near Kandy pedestrian crossing
An 11-year-old student and his father have been killed when a jeep driven by former Provincial Councillor and SLFP Organizer for Pathahewaheta, Gamini Wijayabandara had hit them.
During police investigations it has been revealed that the accident took place on the pedestrian crossing at the Kandy, Dharmaraja College junction on Tuesday (16) at about 6 pm.
The deceased in the accident are Chandika Sampath Rodrigo and his son Vimantha Rodrigo, residents of Sanghamitta Mawatha, Buwelikada, Kandy. Police said the father had gone to pick up his son after attending a class and were returning home when they had been killed.
Former Central Provincial Council Member and Sri Lanka Freedom Party Electorate Organizer for Pathahewaheta, Kandy Gamini Wijayabandara who was arrested by the police had
also been a former Chairman of the Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha as well. He is due to be produced in court.
Information has been revealed that the boy who had been crossing the road clinging on to his father’s hand had been thrown about 15 feet away after the collision. Both the father and son who had sustained severe injuries had been admitted to the Kandy National Hospital and the father had died at about 8.30pm while the son had passed away two hours later.
Rodrigo had been working at a place where they issue certificates for smoke emission, in Kundasale and he had also been the father of two daughters aged nine and three. Kandy Police is carrying out further investigations into the accident.
