FFSL nomination rejection triggers appeal
Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) Presidential candidate Dacshitha Sumathipala and four members face rejection of their nominations. They plan to appeal for a fair verdict from the Appeal Committee. A letter will be submitted today before 3pm, with the decision expected on September 4.
The Electoral Committee of FFSL, led by Justice Dr Abdul Majeed, rejected five names, including Sumathipala and Vice Presidential candidate TI Uduwara, citing FFSL Electoral Code and Statutes violations. The nominations were submitted on August 19 by both Sumathipala’s 13-member team and Juswar Umar’s team, ahead of the September 29 FFSL election as per FIFA’s roadmap.
Sumathipala stated, “We’re taking action according to the law and submitting an appeal before today’s 3pm deadline.” The Appeal Committee, comprising Senior Counsel Sarath Karuanratne, State Counsel Hejaaz Hisbullah, and Attorney-at-Law Chamath Jayasekara, will review the case.
“We anticipate a fair decision from the Appeal Committee,” Sumathipala expressed hope, highlighting that only five members faced rejection and the team was determined to move forward. He added, “The new FFSL constitution allows for an appeal, and we’re confident in a just outcome.”
