FIFA hands Argentina stars massive bans after World Cup Final Brawl

FIFA has handed lengthy suspensions and fines to several Argentina players following the post-match altercation after their defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes received the heaviest punishment, with FIFA imposing a 10-match international suspension and a fine of US$90,000 for his involvement in the confrontation.

Defender Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-match suspension and fined US$90,000, while Thiago Almada received a one-match ban and a US$30,000 fine.

Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was suspended for three matches and fined US$30,000.

Spain midfielder Gavi was also sanctioned over his involvement in the incident, receiving a one-match suspension and a US$30,000 fine.

The confrontation erupted following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

FIFA had opened disciplinary proceedings following a report from its appointed Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor into incidents surrounding the final.

The Argentine Football Association was also fined US$321,000 for several disciplinary breaches during the tournament, including team misconduct, discriminatory behaviour and the display of a political banner.

Argentina was further ordered to play its next two home matches with stadium capacity restricted to 50%, with part of the sanction suspended subject to a probationary period.

The AFA has said it will seek the grounds for the rulings as it prepares to appeal the sanctions. (Newswire)
