Fire at Kandana chemical factory kills one
A sudden fire that erupted at a chemical factory in Uswatte, Kandana yesterday (8) early morning has caused severe damage to the factory and caused the death of one worker, the Kandana Police said.
The Police said that the deceased was the 47-year-old accountant of the factory, Samantha Abeyratne, a resident of Horagolla, Ganemulla. The fire was brought under control and doused with the assistance of the Colombo, Gampaha, Negombo Fire Brigade Units together with the Navy.
Meanwhile around 200 students of the St. Sebastian Girls’ school which is located near the factory that caught fire, had
suffered breathing difficulties due to inhaling the toxic fumes of the fire and had been admitted to the Ragama Teaching Hospital and the Aniyakanda Regional Hospital for treatment, according to the Administrative Officer of the Ja-ela Health Medical Office, Public Health Inspector S.Jayakody.
The Chief Medical Officer of the Aniyakanda Regional Hospital, Dr.Dhammika Pathirana said that out of 74 students who were admitted to the hospital for treatment, six were admitted to enable resident treatment and the others had obtained treatment and left the hospital and sent home.
A team of Police officers are carrying out further investigations into the fire on the instructions of Kandana Police OIC Gamini Hewavithana.
