First stock of eggs from India to arrive this week

Trade, Commerce and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando yesterday said that the first stock of eggs imported from India will reach the country within this week.  

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo yesterday, Minister Fernando said that four containers of eggs will be imported to the country in compliance with the guidelines laid by the Animal Production and Health Department.

He also said that the import of eggs was delayed due to having to follow various recommendations in obtaining the initial permission for the import of eggs.

He also said that it was decided to bring the eggs required for the industry in powder and liquid form.

The Minister added that even though they tried to keep egg prices at a controlled level, a group raised the price of eggs from Rs.45 to between Rs. 75-80.

He also said that there is a 40 percent reduction in egg production and accordingly, tourist businesses and hotels were badly affected. Therefore, he requested permission to import eggs. Accordingly, the Minister further said that imports will be done with proper approval.
