In an accident that took place on the bridge that is being constructed across the Thummodera Hamilton Canal, close to the Nattandiya town, on the Nattandiya-Negombo main road, when a tipper truck collided with a motor vehicle which rolled into the canal, five persons including four from the same family who sustained injuries were admitted to the Marawila Base Hospital.
The tipper which was being driven at extremely high speed had been unable to control its speed had hit another vehicle and a motorcycle and then collided with the vehicle that rolled into the Hamilton Canal, Police said. This accident had taken place at about 9.30pm on Thursday (28).The mother and father together with their two daughters aged 17 and 22 and a person who had been travelling on the motorcycle had been hospitalised. The accident had happened when the motor vehicle was travelling from Nattandiya to Kegalle and a tipper truck which had appeared from the opposite direction had hit it.The motor vehicle has been severely damaged.
Marawila Police said that the accident had been caused by the tipper truck driver who had been drunk and was speeding. This driver has been taken into custody.
