Five officials of Motor Traffic Department face travel ban over massive fraud
According to Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) there are around 5,000 vehicles that have been fraudulently registered while denying the Government millions of rupees by way of tax.
The Commission further stated that this large-scale fraud, which is depriving the Government of billions of rupees in tax revenue, is carried out in an organized manner and that the Intelligence Division of the CIABOC has started investigations into this incident.
According to the Commission, five officials of the Motor Traffic Department have been banned from travelling abroad in connection with the incident of a luxury Mini Cooper having been registered in a fraudulent manner. The order to ban their foreign travel was issued according to the Bribery or Corruption Amendment Act No. 20 of 1994, a spokesman for the Commission said.
Charges were filed before the Colombo High Court on December 22 against these officials by the Commission alleging the data of a three-wheeler imported to Sri Lanka in 2017 was altered by them and instead the Mini Cooper imported to Sri Lanka in 2015 was registered, denying a Rs.2.5 million tax income to the government.
