The Agriculture Ministry has received information that the male chicks produced in the chicken farms belonging to the National Livestock Development Board are not being used for any purpose and are being used to feed the pigs in the pig farms.

Five thousand of these animals have been given weekly to pig farms.

Agriculture and Plantation Industry Minister Mahinda Amaraweera advised the National Livestock Development Board to take steps to start a programme to increase their daily income by providing these animals free of charge to the currently unemployed people.

A progress review discussion on the measures taken by the National Livestock Development Board and the National Heartland Authority for the development of livestock was held at the Agriculture Ministry on Monday (11) under the Chairmanship of Minister Amaraweera.

Accordingly, so far 5,000 male chicks have been used for pig feed per week and the National Livestock Development Board has taken steps to distribute those chicks among people interested in poultry farming for meat.

According to the National Livestock Development Board, 50,000 male chicks have been distributed among people interested in raising animals for meat.

Meanwhile, the National Hadabima Authority has also started a programme of providing free female chicks with the aim of increasing egg production. Under this, 20,000 hens have been distributed among low-income families as part of a programme to develop livelihoods in the egg industry. Under that, steps have been taken to provide ten and twenty female chicks per family.

By now, the eggs of the hens distributed under that work arrangement are coming to the market and the people engaged in that industry have also got an opportunity to earn additional income.
