Five thousand metric tons of organic fertilizer to be exported monthly
Arrangements have been made to export 5,000 metric tons of solid organic fertilizers processed at this centre every month. Most of this fertilizer is being supplied for a cultivation project currently being built in Dubai.
The activities to increase the production of organic fertilizers at Welimada Ulugalawatta Organic Solid Fertilizer Processing Center under the National Food Promotion Board started on Friday (11).
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera inspected the successful vegetable cultivation and papaya cultivation cultivated in the safe houses prepared using organic fertilizers.
The Minister said that the decision to use 100 percent organic fertilizers in the agriculture sector of the country has completely destroyed the agricultural sector.
He also mentioned that even though the farmers have been motivated to apply chemical fertilizers again 100 percent by now, scholars have previously launched a big debate across the country regarding the health problems caused by the application of chemical fertilizers.
But due to the bad results of implementing 100 percent organic farming, they are not expressing their opinions about it now.
However, in order to get successful results from farming, it has been confirmed by the research conducted by the Department of Agriculture that applying both organic and chemical fertilizers according to the recommended amounts will lead to higher yields as well as food quality.
The Minister also mentioned that according to the tests conducted by the Bathalagoda Paddy Breeding Center, the highest yield of rice has been achieved by using both organic and chemical fertilizers according to proper recommendations.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and Uva Provincial Governor A. H. M. Muzammil, Member of Parliament Sudarshana Denipitiya, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Gunadasa Samarasinghe and Chairman of the National Food Promotion Board Palinda Sagara were present.
