The Small Tea Estate Development Authority and the Sri Lanka Tea Board emphasized that due to the floods caused by the heavy rain in the last few days, the tea cultivation in the southern province especially in the Matara district has been severely affected.

In this regard, a discussion was held with the said officers at the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera today (05) in the morning.

Many tea plantations were submerged due to floods. Even after the flood receded, the experts of the Sri Lanka Tea Board emphasized that there is a threat of death of the tea cultivations due to the smearing of mud on the tea leaves caused by the flood.

For this reason, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the officials to inform the tea growers in this regard in order to protect the small tea estates and to start a program to wash or remove mud from the tea leaves with water.

The lifespan of a tea plant is about 30 years and it takes about three years for a tea plant to grow. Because of this, the minister also advised to take all necessary measures to protect the tea plantations which may be destroyed due to floods.

Also, due to floods and heavy rains, about 15,000 acres of paddy fields have been critically affected. Also, many lands where vegetables were cultivated have also been destroyed due to the rain and floods. The Minister instructed the Ministry Secretary Mr. Janaka Dharmakeerthi to give an immediate report on all these crop damages.

The minister also said that a compensation program will be started for these crops.

The minister said that due to the destruction of a large amount of land where vegetables were cultivated due to the rain, the price of vegetables is likely to increase in the coming period and advised the Department of Agricultural Development and the Department of Agricultural Development to start gardening programs.
