Fonseka backs plan to extend judges’ retirement age

Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said he supports the government’s decision to extend the retirement age of judges, adding that he would have welcomed similar measures for the military.

Speaking at a public event, Fonseka said military personnel are required to retire after completing their service, with many leaving the armed forces between the ages of 50 and 55 despite family and financial commitments.

He also noted that government employees retire at the age of 60, when many still have children sitting for GCE Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations.

Fonseka said increasing the retirement age, as practiced in some developed countries, does not necessarily affect a person’s ability to perform their duties.

“It has been 20 years since I retired. My brain is working well. If I were given command of the Army today, I could command it, although I would not accept it,” he said.

He added that countries such as the United States have judges who serve until around the age of 70, while some military commanders are also in their 70s. (Newswire)
