The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suphajee Suthumpun’s recent visit to Sri Lanka was entirely private and that all requested courtesies were extended by the Sri Lankan authorities.
The clarification follows allegations by the United National Party (UNP) that the Government had failed to provide appropriate diplomatic recognition and security arrangements during her visit to Mihintale.
The Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, who also serves as Director General of Public Diplomacy, said the Thai Deputy Prime Minister visited Sri Lanka exclusively to participate in the religious enshrinement ceremony at Mihintale alongside Buddhist devotees.
The Ministry said no other government officials accompanied her in the delegation, as the visit was undertaken in a private capacity.
According to the Ministry, the Thai Embassy had requested access to the VIP lounge and other courtesies, which were granted by the Sri Lankan authorities.
The Ministry further noted that the Thai Deputy Prime Minister had previously undertaken similar private visits to Sri Lanka to participate in religious activities.
The clarification comes after the UNP called on the Government to explain why the visiting Deputy Prime Minister had allegedly not received appropriate diplomatic courtesies and security arrangements.
The Foreign Ministry maintained that the courtesies requested by the Thai side had been provided. (Newswire)
