Forged licence racket near RMV busted

The Police Special Task Force (STF) Intelligence Unit on Monday uncovered a racket of forging documents such as driver’s licenses,

revenue certificates and national identity cards.

Police say that the racket has been running for a long time in a house located near the Motor Traffic Commissioner’s office in Narahenpita.

STF investigations revealed that various documents are prepared the same way like the real documents issued by the government for amounts between Rs. 5000 and 25,000.

The Police Special Task Force states that two forged driving licences, 18 expired driving licences of various persons, seven bank cards, 11 blank cards used to forge identity cards and driving licences, 03 revenue certificates along with 01 IBM type monitor used to forge documents, LG – 01 CORE i3 type CPU and 01 Samsung keyboard were found in this raid.

The arrested suspect is 37 year old man educated in a Colombo school, who is a resident of Narahenpita.

Police said this person once ran a food shop next to the railway line near the Elvitigala apartment complex.

Investigations have also led to find that this person has been carrying on this racket for many years but has never been caught by police since he worked only through brokers.

It has been found that expired driving licences are being used by this person to forge driving licences.

Investigations have also revealed that he deletes the data in the expired driving licences and re-enters new data. A senior police officer said a separate investigation is being conducted into find how the driver got the expired driving licences.

STF has taken steps to hand over the arrested suspect and all items including equipment to the Narahenpita Police Station for court proceedings.

The raid was conducted by a team of officials including Police Inspector M.A.P.B. Rajanayake, under the supervision of Assistant Superintendent of Police (Intelligence/ Special Operations/ Anti-Narcotics and Organized Crime) Sagara Kulasekara and under the direction of Chief Inspector Nadika Silva, Station Commander of Intelligence Division and as per the orders and instructions of DIG Waruna Jayasundara, Commandant of Special Task Force of Police.
