Former CID Director Shani files Rs.1,000 Mn lawsuit against arrest

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director Shani Abeysekera, has filed a case before the Colombo District Court demanding compensation of Rs.1,000 mn for the damage done to his self-esteem by arresting him on false charges and remanding him by improperly using the judicial process.

Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickremaratne, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province Deshbandu Tennakoon, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Colombo Crimes Division Neville Silva, Inspector Jagath Nishantha and the Attorney General have been named as defendants in the petition.

In this petition filed through attorney Manjula Balasuriya, Shani Abeysekera claims that the officers of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) conducted an investigation against him with malicious intent and revenge on the firearms found in connection with the murder of millionaire businessman Mohammad Shyam.

He has pointed out that this investigation was conducted according to the decision of the Inspector General of Police and the Senior Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Western Province.

Abeysekara has mentioned in his petition that Colombo Crimes Division’s ASP Neville Silva and IP Jagath Nishantha had pressured various people during these investigations, to make false statements against him.

He has mentioned that accordingly, the respondents had taken him into custody and produced him before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court and then remanded him in custody and after many months he was released on the advice of the Attorney General.

Abeysekera had filed this case demanding compensation of Rs.1,000 million on behalf of the disrepute targeting his self-esteem in a malicious manner due to the respondents misusing the judicial process through this.
