Former cop who defrauded millions claiming to be ‘good samaritan’ remanded till Nov. 2

Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday (25) ordered to remand till November 2, a former Police officer of the Weeraketiya Police arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department and produced in Court in connection with an incident where he had posed as a representative of UNICEF and claimed to give aid money to the poor and sick in Hambantota district and taken millions of rupees from the bank accounts of those people through the internet banking system.

Munasinghe Arachchige Sajith Priyankara, a registered criminal, was thus remanded in custody. It has been revealed that this suspect has been involved in several cases of robbing gold items and money by threatening people with arms and has also targeted sick and poor people in areas such as Tangalle, Ranna, Ambalangoda, Ambalantota, Walasmulla and Kirama.

Pretending to be a Samurdhi official, a UNICEF official and a Divisional Secretariat office official, this suspect had visited the homes of poor people and stated that he would give aid money and obtained details of their bank accounts.

The suspect had selected families with no technical knowledge and suffering from economic hardships asked for their phones, set up WhatsApp accounts for those numbers, made calls

through them and ordered various items online.

The Criminal Investigation Department informed court that the suspect had been living a luxurious life, having paid for these goods online through the accounts of poor people.

The Criminal Investigation Department informed court that about 20 complaints had been received regarding frauds and the suspect had defrauded millions. It is revealed that the defrauded money had been used to buy land, vehicles and houses and had also been invested in casino games.

The suspect had been arrested after several months of investigations carried out by CID Computer Crimes Investigation Division OIC, Inspector Erandha Thibbotuwawa, SI H.N.B.Madushanka, Police Constables Iddamalgoda, Chinthaka, Lahiru, Jayaratne and Chaturanga.
