The former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Palestine and SLFP Colombo District Organizer Fawzan Anwer called for an immediate cessation of violence in Israel and Palestine, and urgent talks through the UN to address the immediate causes of the violence.
Speaking to the media in Colombo, he urged all parties to cease their attacks against civilians. “Parties to the conflict must uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law, including taking all necessary precautions to distinguish between civilians and combatants,” he added.
The UN should request safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance into Gaza and all affected conflict areas, he added.
He said the SLFP too has condemned the violence and added that the party, over the years and under different leaders, has always supported a peaceful and just solution to the issue of the Palestinian people.
“Year after year, civilians have borne the brunt of armed conflict. Violence and injustice fuel further cycles of violence and injustice. No lasting solution lies in the use of force,” he said.
Anwer further said that the implementation UN resolutions on this regard could be a solution to the crisis.
