Former LTTE explosives expert arrested in Abu Dhabi, brought here by the CID
An expert on explosives and member of the intelligence unit of the LTTE, who had been issued a red notice by the Interpol, has been arrested by the local police in Abu Dhabi and handed over to Sri Lanka.
A police team headed by a Chief Inspector of the TID had gone to Abu Dhabi and brought the suspect back to the country yesterday (11) on a flight from Abu Dhabi under special security.
This is the first instance that a terrorist had been apprehended by the Abu Dhabi authorities and handed over to Sri Lanka.
The TID had gathered information to confirm that Rasanayagam Thavanesam was an LTTE member and an expert in explosives. He has been identified as a main suspect in many of the explosions that took place in and around Colombo during the war. He has been identified as a 48-year-old and is suspected to have fled the country with other terrorists.
The prominent LTTE intelligence wing member is currently detained at the TID and investigations are being carried out. The police said that he would be produced in court shortly.
