Former Minister Mahinda Wijesekara passed away

Former Minister Mahinda Wijesekara has passed away at the age of 83, family sources confirmed.

Wijesekara, the father of former Minister Kanchana Wijesekara, served as a Member of Parliament from 1989 to 2010, representing the Matara District, and held several ministerial portfolios during his political career.

In 2009, Wijesekara was seriously injured in a suicide bombing that targeted a religious event in Akuressa. He survived the attack but suffered long-term health complications following the incident.

Widely regarded as a veteran politician from the Southern Province, Wijesekara played a significant role in local and national politics over two decades.
