Former NCP CM’s Embezzlement indictment fixed for trial on February 12

The indictment on embezzlement filed against former North Central Province Chief Minister S.M. Ranjith Samarakoon and his personal Secretary Shanthi Chandrasena, by the Bribery Commission, yesterday, was fixed for trial on February 12 by the Colombo High Court.

The bribery charges filed against the two of them was for illegally obtaining a fuel allowance worth in excess of Rs. 2 million.

The case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Adhithya Patabendige and summons was issued to two prosecution witnesses to appear before the Court on that day.

The Bribery Commission had filed indictment against accused Ranjith Samarakoon and his Personal Secretary under 6 counts for allegedly taking action to give an undue profit to the Private Secretary while acting as the Chief Minister of the North Central Province between the years 2012 and 2014.

The case was filed by the Bribery Commission on charges of embezzlement, including the obtaining of Rs. 2,680,528.10 from a fuel order while the fuel allowance was paid, and intimidating government officials to do so.
