Former NTC Chairman Renuka Perera granted bail in corruption case

Former Chairman of the National Transport Commission (NTC) Renuka Perera, who was remanded over allegations involving the irregular issuance of bus route permits, has been granted bail by the court.

Perera was ordered to be released on two surety bails of Rs. 5 million each after being produced before court today (29).

He was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on September 17 in connection with the alleged illegal issuance of route permits for buses.

The former NTC Chairman is accused of issuing 56 passenger service permits for the Southern Expressway outside the legally prescribed procedure and without collecting the annual fees in a single payment.

The alleged actions are said to have been carried out contrary to provisions of the National Transport Commission Act No. 37 of 1991 and recommendations contained in a Cabinet decision dated September 19, 2014.

Following his arrest, Perera was remanded by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court until September 29. (Newswire)
