Former Sri Lanka goal keeper Bernard de Silva passes away
Former Sri Lanka football star DIG Bernard de Silva (Rtd) passed away on Saturday morning after a brief illness. He was a brilliant goalkeeper representing the Police and the National soccer team for more than a decade. He made his international debut in1976 when Sri Lanka toured Pakistan for the Aga Khan Gold Cup tournament under Sumith Walpola. Before joining Police, he turned out for Jupiter SC, Negombo. ‘Bernie’ as he was affectionately called was a respected Police officer whose dedication to duty was exemplary during his 38 years of service in the force.
Starting his career in 1976 as a Sub Inspector, Bernie went through the mill serving as Officer-in-Charge of Stations, Districts and Divisions in general policing; and also headed the most prestigious institutions like
the Narcotics Bureau, Special Branch and Headquarters Administration; and ended his career as DIG Headquarters.
He was a fearless Police officer who fought against injustice.
He is survived by his beloved wife and children.
His remains lie at his residence at No. 551/9, Colombo Road, Seeduwa. The funeral will be held today (17th) evening at General Cemetery, Borella.
