Former Sri Lanka IGP Pujith Jayasundara sentenced to death

0 0

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara was sentenced to death by a majority decision of a three-judge bench of the Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar after being found guilty of criminal negligence, dereliction of duty and aiding murder over the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

The verdict was delivered on Friday by the three-judge bench, which heard the case filed by the Attorney General over allegations that Jayasundara failed to act on prior intelligence warnings of imminent terror attacks despite having received the information before the Easter Sunday bombings.

The prosecution argued that the former police chief’s failure to take preventive action despite available intelligence amounted to criminal negligence and contributed to the attacks that killed hundreds of people and injured many others.

The case had initially resulted in Jayasundara’s acquittal in 2022, but the Supreme Court later overturned that decision and ordered the trial to continue, leading to Friday’s verdict. (Newswire)
